Interesting outfits with shorts

Is it just me, or does shorts season feel super boring? Somehow when I reach for a pair of shorts the outfit-making part of my brain stops. All I can think is to add a t-shirt. Here are some slightly-styled shorts outfits I’ve made lately to keep it interesting!

6 things I actually wear when it’s 100 degrees out

I have a really hard time figuring out what to wear when it’s 100 degrees out (or more). The truth is no clothing seems reasonable for extremely hot weather, and most sources of fashion inspo don’t account for these temperatures. So here are some outfits and closet essentials that I am actually wearing for high summer.

It’s too damn hot! Here are some business casual outfits

Every year I arrive at July and am completely out of office outfit inspiration, because it is over 100 degrees outside and no business casual outfit seems reasonable. And yet I must go to work anyway. Here are 3 outfits I’ve made recently, plus my ultimate trick for professional clothes when it’s hot.

My quest to get better at summer clothes

One of my style goals this year is to embrace summer clothes. I feel like I hear from plenty of friends who agree with me that fall dressing is best–the layers make it easy to feel fashionable! But summer? It’s hard to get more creative than a tank top and shorts when it’s 100 degrees out. And yet, I now live somewhere where summer stays for 5 months of the year. So let’s think of warmer temperatures today and do some virtual shopping together!

May 30×30 Week 3: The 30 piece mix and match capsule continues

30 day summer capsule wardrobe

We’re in week 3 of the May 30×30 challenge and that’s a lot of threes! I’m still wearing the same 30 items for the month. I have been enjoying the simplicity, the permission to repeat outfits, and the easy decisions I get to make every morning. Plus, it’s really hot out here, so this has been a great way to get reacquainted with my summer clothes in capsule form. Here’s what I wore this week!

30 pieces for 30 days: Week 1 of Summer Outfits

It’s the end of week 1 of the May 30×30 capsule wardrobe challenge! I’ve had fun mixing and matching my items this week to make colorful and easy summer outfits. I was pleased with the light and warm colors and kind of retro vibe of my outfits this week that made my normal black and white wardrobe a bit more fun. Here’s what I wore this week!

My choices for the Summer 10×10

image

The Summer 10×10 starts Friday, so I’ve picked my 10 items of clothing out to get ready to make my outfits. Here are my picks (some not pictured):

-4 tops (boho, knit tank, tie t-shirt: all thrifted, and chambray: J Crew investment)

-3 bottoms (linen pants, white midi skirt: thrifted, jean cut offs: here)

-1 dress (here, on sale for $40)

-2 pairs of shoes (converse, sandals thrifted)

No black clothes!

I tried to pick lighter colors this time around and gave myself the challenge to pick no black clothes. Black is my go-to neutral color and I’m trying to move toward tan and white in the summer.

On my agenda

My 10×10 this time consists of nothing but dissertation writing and social time. I need outfits that are appropriate for field work (I am doing qualitative research in a casual, but masculine, environment–I usually opt for muted colors and pants in that situation), but that’s my only constraint. I tried to pick fun items to remind me to go outside, downtown, and away from my laptop in general.

The other challenge of my 10×10 is that it’s so hot that all clothes seem like bad options. I picked linen and other soft, breezy items for that purpose.

That’s my 10×10 kick off–see you on Friday with the first outfit.

What I’m packing for a summer conference

Professionalism is hard enough without it being 90 degrees with 80% humidity, but that’s exactly what I’m facing next week at a Nashville conference I’m attending. Here’s what I’m packing and what’s on the agenda:

Teaching when it’s hot out pt. 4

CULOTTES FOR PRESIDENT

Hi all. Just popping by to say OMG IT’S AUGUST I BETTER MAKE A SYLLABUS. It’s also the last week of summer school so here is one more outfit I’ve been relying on frequently to get through teaching when it is sweltering outside.

For about 2.5 years I resisted buying culottes because they reminded me of middle school (my mom bought me a pink pair in 7th grade and I thought I was the sh*t). But then after a couple glasses of wine I went into Madewell (Wine shopping is highly recommended, btw) and tried these on and I was like WAIT culottes are awesome. Just goes to show that you should always try things on!

So now here I am, combining these culottes with everything imaginable, including this button up from Target, which has lots of cute fall business clothes if you are in the market.

I hope the August grad school panic is treating you all well. ❤
