Today I decided to put together some summer work outfit ideas using my new white flats. I thrifted these flats last week and I am pretty excited about them–so much so that I had like 8 outfit ideas for them while still standing in Goodwill. And shouldn’t all clothing purchases inspire creativity like that?! Here are some easy summer work outfits I will be reaching for:Continue reading “Easy summer work outfits with flats”
I found this pair of pants at Buffalo Exchange several weeks ago. I usually don’t buy pants online because of my height and needing to see the length in person, and this gave me the perfect chance to try out a trendy pair. After some searching I found that they are the Everlane Straight Leg Crop and sell for $68. Not bad for a pair of dress pants. Here’s why I’ve found them to be delightful for work…Continue reading “Product review: Everlane Straight Leg Crop Pant”
This year is in the bag now and I am one part relieved, one part too exhausted to process, and one part screaming “why does anything about my life have to change?! It’s fine as is!” What can I say. I’m a reluctant mover. Plus my regularly scheduled exercise classes are over and I am just totally adrift without necessary endorphins. Onto the outfits…Continue reading “What I wore, what I read: May 13-17”
My mom is the happiest person I know, and I was always aware of it growing up. It made me proud, for a while. Then I became a teenager, and I started rolling my eyes. A lot. It was easy to make fun of my mom for being so cheery. Then I went off to college and I started to really appreciate her again. But then, I realized that not only was my mom super happy, she was also really smart about being happy–she made choices to make herself happy everyday. She sings in the grocery store. She laughs super loud while watching tv. She gets excited about everything from running into friends to hearing her favorite songs. And you know what? All of that takes work.
I really started to understand the work of being happy and that appreciation has only grown since I got to grad school, where it’s clear that I can either find a way to enjoy this life, or I can let my potentially demanding job choice swallow me whole. I definitely don’t make the more difficult choice every day, but I do try! So this week, I asked some wise grad school friends why happiness can seem so hard in academia. Here’s what we came up with…Continue reading “Maintaining optimism in a demanding career–or, why happiness is not a waste of time in grad school”

Oh, graduation is next week and I haven’t looked for any commencement dress ideas for graduate students. Which means…I don’t really have “the dress” for my own graduation. I am probably just going to wear an old favorite (which I was also supposed to take to get hemmed, oops), but if you’re on the hunt for a grad school appropriate graduation dress that you can get fast, here are some options…Continue reading “Last minute graduation dresses”
I’m so excited to finally be able to tell you: I have a job! A professor job! I am so excited. But also a little emotionally exhausted. Before I got the job, I was 95% worry every waking hour (and most of the night…). After, I just have to keep reminding myself that the search is over. But the challenges of trying to graduate are not. I will be moving to Las Vegas and starting as an assistant professor in the fall.
I wouldn’t let myself hope for the best–the academic job market is tough (understatement)–so I hadn’t processed any of the exciting parts of having a professor job. And finally getting to talk with you all about the academic job hunting process is one of those things! So, let’s start today with the easy stuff: every outfit I wore to an academic interview.Continue reading “Every job interview outfit I wore/a life announcement”
Are you ready for some ugly pictures?? I am currently on day 9 of an Instagram challenge called #12daysofminimalism. It’s pretty simple–on day 1, clean out 1 item, on day 2, 2 items, and so forth. So far I’ve learned that just because you have a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean the rest of your life is not cluttered. Like ugh. Here’s what I’ve cleaned out so far.Continue reading “I tried #12daysofminimalism”
