I know there’s a bigger sale getting hype on the internet right now (every influencer in the world is blogging about it, rhymes with Pordstrom, no more hints), but I look forward to July because that seems to be the time J. Crew puts their clearance on sale for an extra 50% off, aka the only time I buy their clothes. Here are some of my picks if you’re looking for back-to-school teacher stuff:

I’m approaching the 1-year-left-til-I-graduate mark, but that hasn’t stopped me from admiring all the cute potential graduation-worthy dresses available at the moment. I’m of two minds about formal wear: on one hand, I’m team treat yoself, on the other, I think it’s nice if formal wear can work for more than one occasion. So I thought I would round some grad dresses up for if you’re in the market for a classy dress for several pending occasions:
1) Dress-up-dress-down sundress:
It all started with a suit. I stumbled onto the Poshmark site late last summer, thought, “huh, like Ebay, but only clothes,” and probably would have just left…but then I found it. A gently used J. Crew suit, in tall sizes, for $40. Could this site be for real?? I weighed my options. I figured if I lost $40 in some scam, I would be a little sad. But not as sad as I would be buying a $200+ suit for my impending time on the academic job market. I got out my credit card.
This week I’m talking about my search for affordable business clothes–today I’ll talk traditional thrifting, later this week I’ll move on to my current app-addiction, Poshmark. But today: thrifting.
I just reread Karen Kelsky’s The Professor is In, a book all about how to land the tenure track job at the end of the grad school tunnel (cannot recommend this enough, also has useful tips about leaving academia).
