The budget pick
I found this bag on Tiktok last month and I guess it’s viral, for good reason. It holds a LOT of stuff and it is under $30. It is made of fabric, has top handles and a crossbody strap, and has 3 large exterior pockets. The inside also has a supporting piece in the bottom to keep the bag from sagging. It does not have a laptop sleeve, but otherwise, it’s pretty awesome. I’ve been carrying it for a month with no complaints!
The test of time pick
I’ve been carrying a Madewell tote to grad school and work as a professor since 2018 and it is still looking great. The great thing about leather is it can really last forever if you care for it–I use this leather conditioner about twice per year and it keeps it good as new. This is not a highly organized tote inside, but it fits a laptop and looks beautiful.
This tote is also $40 cheaper and highly recommended!
The backpack for adults
When I started my masters program, I went out and bought this backpack. I remember poring over hundreds of options for backpacks for grad students. I wanted to get it right, and I’m happy to say I did! It holds a lot, has a laptop sleeve, and the leather details give it a little bit of a “I’m the teacher!” feel. It is still going strong, 11 years later.
Waterproof
Going to grad school in the rain? Doing a lot of walking or biking? This is your bag. It is waterproof (and under $30 right now!?). I have a friend who used one on his bike commute and absolutely loved it!
Ethically made
Another bag loved by many grad students I know is any tote from Able! Able generously gifted this one to me a few months back and I have loved carrying it to do coffee shop work. The giant front pockets are a plus, it’s also pretty light for leather. The only drawback is my laptop has to go in vertically. But it works! Several grad student friends have carried Able bags for years, so I know they hold up. They are pricier, but they often have sales, so I would watch for that.
