What I wore: May

It’s the end of May–here’s what I wore this month for teaching, end-of-the-school-year events, and summer work-from-home life. Alternative title: how are we making outfits with shorts interesting this year?

Teacher friends, what do you get up to in May? I’ve always found it to be a strange month. It’s not quite full summer, and I always have a May conference, which leads to the classic “do I start this project now or just wait until after Memorial Day” procrastination technique. I try to treat May as a break, because I know we all need one, so here are some fun things I did!

I wore this outfit to an outdoor craft market—getting back into the community is a good way to remember myself in the summer, plus the temperatures are nicer in May!

Romper (similar, this one’s from ThredUP)
Hat
Sandals (similar)
Tote (similar)

Next I started picking cute outfits for coffee shop work time as a way to be motivated as I finish up odds and ends from the semester! This calls for a round-up of shorts I don’t hate. The list is short and has been cultivated over three summers:

White pleated (similar)
Loose denim
Green pleated (similar)
Red pleated (similar)

I like shorts best when they are almost an A-line shape, and then I can add a form-fitting top and whatever the sandals of the day are. I have learned to size up in most shorts to get looser legs (and then tailor or, more realistically, belt the waist). I have also bought some “almost perfect” shorts that are just too long and have had them hemmed to my preferred length. I know this is a lot of work for shorts, but they’re my least favorite necessary clothing item, and it’s been worth the hassle to have 5 pairs that are ok!

Some good tops to go with:

Navy tee (this is the best non-see through tee ever, but unisex, so size down)
Gray tank (these are so soft!!!)
Sage tank

Finally, I wore a lot of black this month, which is my preference in the summer because it hides sweat (sometimes people ask me if I’ll be hot in the sun, but how often are we all standing out in the sun??).

I wore my newly sewn tank dress (non-sewing option!) out for a special dinner with these sandals, my recent blazer find, and a vintage straw bag (I’m accidentally starting a straw bag collection—they’re so fun to find secondhand!).

My one shoulder dress is another sewing pattern (here’s a similarly casual option!). I love it and might make a knit version this year! And you can see my last post on statement tops for summer here if you like my black one!

That’s all for now, I’ll be back next week with another conference packing list!
