Modern Citizen Review: An honest take on quality, style & value

Modern Citizen review

If you like modern, chic workwear, chances are you’ve been served an ad for Modern Citizen clothing. The brand boasts modern, slightly edgy women’s workwear that is akin to Aritzia and Everlane. Naturally, I was super sucked in by the aesthetic and have placed a few orders — here is my Modern Citizen review. I include my thoughts on sizing, quality, fabric, and finding Modern Citizen on sale!!!

Thoughts on the quality of Modern Citizen clothing

I have seen some mixed Modern Citizen reviews–especially about the quality of their clothing–on Reddit. I own 4 things from Modern Citizen now and would say the quality is good, not great. I have the Jude wrap top (this was their mega-viral top for a while–the look lives on in this tie-waist dress) and have worn it sooo many times. It has held up extremely well!

I also have the Kenny tee, and have found that quality to be a tad lower. There is a stitch on the neckline that has already popped open. Otherwise, the shirt is holding up well.

I do need to note: I always hang my work clothes to dry. I do find that any clothing item does better without the dryer, so that probably makes a difference in my perception of all brands!

Modern Citizen sizing

My main frustration with Modern Citizen is 1) limited sizing (most things go up to a XL) and 2) very few reviews of items on their website. This can make online shopping feel a bit like a crapshoot. In general, I say they run true to size to one size small.

I’m quite tall (5’11”) and find that a lot of their stuff is more cropped than I would like, so I size up one for length. However, I sized up one in the Kenny tee and wish I hadn’t–it’s kind of bulky to tuck into pants.

Fabric composition, shipping, and other notes

A final couple notes on Modern Citizen:

-They have a lot of poly blends. If you’re a 100% cotton or linen person, you might be able to find that on the website, but you’ll have to dig a bit. Some things are mostly cotton or linen, with some elastane which I assume is for shape (I love the look of this off the shoulder top and this cotton tee right now!)

-I know buying online is a bit scary, but I’ve always found their shipping to be fast and reliable. I have not, however, attempted a return, so I can’t speak to that!

Does Modern Citizen have sales?

If you’re always looking for budget-friendly office clothes, like me, you may notice that Modern Citizen pricing is kind of high ($80-150). Fortunately, they do have a bi-annual sale (typically July-August). There are also some items floating around on Poshmark. I tend to wait for the sale and choose my items carefully–I have another Prima dress coming right now because I love it sooo much. If you sign up for their mailing list they also occassionally send a 15% off code.

Final verdict

I try to pay attention to fabric composition and reviews when possible when picking out Modern Citizen clothing. It takes a bit of diligence, but so far, I’ve been quite happy with what I’ve bought. The price is higher, but the styles are unique and make me feel like me at work. They also make great headshot tops (IMO)! Now just hold me back because I really want this wrap dress, and wrap tee, oh and this vest!

That’s my Modern Citizen review. If you have thoughts or suggestions for similar brands you recommend, please share!
