If you are a professor or grad student starting a new position, you may be asked to take an academic headshot soon! These may be featured on the department website and they may haunt you for the forseeable future. So, what to wear?
What NOT to wear for your academic headshot
Here are my best general tips for picking an academic headshot outfit:
- Look up the backdrop: When possible, check faculty bios on the website to see the typical backdrop used and make sure to stand out from the backdrop!
- Check your neckline: A v or square neckline under a blazer can get cropped out of the shot, so, fair warning, you may end up looking nude if you choose this option.
- Check your sleeve length: This is very optional, but I think a sleeve that extends to your elbow creates a more seemless headshot, becuase you’re less likely to end up cropped in a way that showcases some sleeve and some bare arm.
- Be careful of patterns: A small stripe can create waves on camera, like you’re trying to hypnotize everyone that gazes upon you. Textures, however, can be a nice touch on camera!
