It’s hot as heck in the northern hemisphere, which leads to allll kinds of fashion challenges. No one wants to find, let alone put on, hot weather clothing for work–but it is possible! Here’s what’s on your mind, according to my Instagram DMs.
Hot weather interview outfits

I suggest 1) this undershirt, which wicks sweat, and 2) a dress with a loose sleeve, like so. This one is also cotton, which is nice and breathable. You can then throw a blazer over the top when presenting, and take it off for the rest of the day. I added a subtle statement flat and necklace for fun, plus an all-business tote.
Summer conference outfits

Someone asked what to wear to an academic conference with 90-degree weather. Another asked for outfits when it’s “hot outside for the commute, freezing indoors.” And someone else requested plus-size summer conference outfits. Where are you all going?!
I like: 1) this waisted shirt dress (sizes XS-4X, tall and petite, also COUGH ANTHRO DUPPPE), 2) this super-low heel, which is reminding me of 90s office outfits in the best way, 3) a fun colored tote (like this or this!).
Summer orientations in hot weather

What do you wear to new grad student orientation when you’re in a hot and humid climate? Or new faculty orientation? Similarly, we got a request for “making a good first impression on a new PI while also surviving campus heat and a campus tour.”
Left: I think a short-sleeve button-down, linen pants, and sandals can go to almost any summer work, even if it’s casual! I’ve also been wearing this necklace for all kinds of hot-weather work events lately. If I had to start over, this would be my new faculty work tote.
Right: A more budget-friendly choice, this linen wrap skirt and linen tee would keep you cool for any campus tours. Couldn’t resist the sandal we all wore everywhere in grad school and a fun green necklace. Don’t forget your grown-up backpack!
Work appropriate summer shoes
Summer shoes are such a tricky part of choosing hot weather clothing for work–someone asked for “shoes that pair well with dresses that are also closed toe.” Here are a few I like:

-This fisherman sandal (I’ve had mine for a couple of months and wear them everywhere!)
-I am once again endorsing sneaker flats. They’re divisive, sure, but my students keep complimenting them!
-The above sling back has great reviews–but I haven’t tried them (yet!)
-The only ballet flat that never, ever gives me blisters now comes in a nice woven pattern for summer!
I hope this addressed some of the challenges that come with looking for hot weather clothing for work! PS–need summer conference outfits?
