What to wear to your dissertation or thesis defense, 2026 edition

It has been 8 years since I defended my dissertation, but I still remember the last-minute panic of trying to pick an outfit. If you are finishing grad school soon, you might be in the same boat! So today, some awesome, stylish readers tell us what to wear to your dissertation or thesis defense–and they have some truly amazing ideas for matching your outfit to your research topic!

Shop your teaching outfits

If you’re defending your dissertation, you may already be teaching, in which case, your teacher wardrobe is a great place to browse for defense outfit ideas:

“I was already in a teaching position, so I just wore what I would normally wear for work. I wore a sunshiney yellow top with a black blazer and slacks.” -Hannah

“I wore wide leg trousers, a blouse, a belt, and heeled boots. I felt pretty good in it!” -Anonymous

“I wore Uniqlo dress pants and a boxy oxford with flats. I liked my shirt enough that I wore it on the first day of my postdoc!” -Eleanor

Multitasking? Consider the suit

“I had two campus visit interviews and my dissertation defense all within a short period, so I rended two suits from Rent the Runway.” -Katie

“I recently defended and splurged on Banana Republic suit separates. Definitely worth it as I plan to reuse the same clothes for job interviews.” -Sarah

Sarah recommended this pair of pants and blazer specifically, while Katie recommended this silk blouse, especially if you are defending in hot weather! Fun flats, tote, and earrings because we all deserve a little defense armor.

Have some fashion fun

There is no dress code for a thesis defense, which is part of the fun! When I asked for ways people dressed to match their dissertation or thesis topic, the responses came POURING in. Here are a few creative ideas:

“I wore a black cherry print dress and a coordinating manicure! It was the school colors so it felt like a must!” -Lindsay

“My diss was about opacity so I wore ‘glass’ things–jelly sandals, translucent earrings!” -Delaney

“I’m a kelp physiologist, so I wore a kelp-colored blouse and kelp-shaped silver jewerly!” -Robin

“Astronomy PhD here: I wore a black and white striped dress that was sort of like an echelle spectograph image. Before you get fun looking rainbows, you get these pretty plain looking striped blocks that encode the secrets of the universe.” -Julie

Others mentioned wearing a little Scottish pin as a nod to their topic, a pomegranate ring to match a Greek history thesis, and a skirt made out of bridge fabric for an engineering thesis! What I learned from this conversation is I could have had WAY more fun dressing up as an emergency manager for my defense, so learn from my regrets.

Thanks so much to everyone who shared what to wear to your dissertation or thesis defense! Congratulations to all brave defenders in 2026! 🙂
