Conference Shopping: Gap

Welcome to my new series where we make academic conference outfits from just one store! If you’re shopping for conference clothes I hope this helps streamline your cart and gives you some ideas for how to mix-and-match out of your packing list. If you’re shopping your closet I hope the outfit ideas also prove helpful!

A sweater dress: A champion for marathon conference days. Looks great with a blazer, folds up small in the suitcase.

A thick cardigan: Conferences are freezing, no matter the season, but especially in the winter. This cardigan is cheerful and could go over any outfit!

Fake dress pants: I showed these on my Instagram story in August and I think at least 5 people went to find them. Absolutely genius for a conference, but also for an easy outfit to wear on the plane!

Sweater skirt: I love bringing a matching set to the conference. You can wear it together for a “wow” look, then break it up and let it guide the rest of your outfits!

Mockneck long sleeve tee: I love having a couple t-shirts in my bag for layering. Under a blazer, no one really cares, at least at my conferences! This gray one is also nice.

Now, onto the outfits!

The gray pants could be dressed cozy with the cardigan or dressed up with the blazer. I think either outfit would look great with any neutral flats or loafers hanging out in your closet (brown, black, or even silver??).

A plaid blazer is always a packing list dream because it directs the rest of what you bring–just pick up on colors in the blazer and you’ll have a coherent color scheme! Here, I played off the warmth with the brown top and red midi skirt, and then kept it simple with a black sweater dress. Both of these outfits would look great with any tall brown boots you have!

There you have it! 3 of these items might make my November packing list–if they do I’ll let you know how they hold up 🙂

  1. Love this series! Fantastic idea. And I also love the practicality of these outfits (they look like things I’ve realistically worn to conferences in the past). Going to check some of these out now— I also have an upcoming November conference in NYC!
