Reader Questions! Dressing for (conference) revenge

I love to solve an academic fashion conundrum, and today’s is a good one! Let’s talk about conference power dressing!

J writes: “Very niche wardrobe query for you–I’m attending a conference this Spring, where I’ll also be having lunch with my ex-husband, who I haven’t seen in years. How do I dress to make him eat his heart out but also for a conference day?

I cackled when I received this question. Dressing for revenge is the best genre. I then sought out the male opinion, which I rarely do when getting dressed, by asking my husband what would make him turn his head in a business casual way. He didn’t have many thoughts, though, so then I polled the group chat. Here’s what we came up with.

Start with whatever makes you feel amazing. Is there something people always compliment? A dress that fits you perfectly, maybe a blouse that is the best color on you? I would try to work around something you already love versus trying something new because that leads to fidgeting, which leads to a lack of confidence.

Some sleek options

Legs for days pants

A highly recommended cozy pencil skirt

The gasp I gusped! Over this violet sheath

Wild shoes

Shoes can just be a power move, I think. Here are a few I found confidence-boosting.

I’ve been eyeing these tall boots for months due to the price point and great reviews! Would be a slay with a midi dress or pencil skirt.

If you want the look of a heel without a ton of height, these come highly recommended.

I’m never gonna wear a heel, though, so enter your Reputation era with these snake flats.

Saucy tops

I am probably not the person to ask about skin-showing tops, considering my “confidence outfit” of choice involves a mockneck tee (you can get an extra 10% off with INFS-AMBREBECCAR)

My friends suggested a wrap sweater–with a pencil skirt, I think this would be stunning!

Finally, a silk button down has the right mix of professional and saucy. Pick whatever color you look devastatingly good in. With wide leg pants, a platform boot, and a long coat? Chef’s kiss.

Finally, just remember that confidence is in the eye of the beholder and most men don’t really have a keen eye for women’s fashion (I had to explain what a pencil skirt was to my husband when writing this post??), and any outfit that you feel great in is the best outfit, for any scenario!
