I tried copying Dakota Johnson’s outfits for a week

Last week Pinterest showed me an outfit from Dakota Johnson (yes, of 50 Shades of Grey). It was the type of outfit that made me say “hey, I can make that!” so I pinned it. By Friday, the Pinterest algorithm had decided I had an unhealthy obsession, and was ONLY showing me Dakota Johnson street style. But all the outfits were pretty cute and casual (not to mention she has an amazing loafers and sunglasses collection). So here I am, deciding to remake as many Dakota Johnson outfits as possible…

Dakota Johnson 1) is a Gucci ambassador (can’t replicate that) but 2) is really into the sort of geek-chic style that I think suits many of us who work in business casual settings. Here are some of my favorite looks…

This outfit was my favorite of the bunch. I never would have paired my snakeskin loafers with my striped bodysuit but now I’m like ??? why not. I challenged myself to use my stretchiest jeans for this, too, so this outfit actually works for work from home life. I think Dakota is actually wearing a chore coat here but my chambray shirt worked just as well. She’s got the most extensive Gucci loafers collection–it was a challenge to find outfits WITHOUT loafers. But now I’m feeling inspired to wear mine more casually. (Shirt/Bodysuit/Jeans/Loafers)

DJ is the queen of oversized blazers and I love that she put a long button up underneath (untucked! I hate tucking in shirts so this was the look for me). I think this would have worked slightly better with an even longer blazer. (Blazer/Shirt/Jeans)

Another favorite. Dakota Johnson went to coffee in this (lol?) but I would wear it to work. I think it’s the unexpected high ponytail. Everything in this outfit is very very old (but this Madewell belt has been worn on repeat).

This outfit was a good reminder that sometimes celebrity outfits look good because the paparazzi took them and the celeb is holding an iced coffee and wearing sunglasses and their sweater probably cost more than your rent. On her? Chic. On me? Just a normal outfit. (Sweater/Jeans/Boots)

This outfit is both the most absurd and the best. A flannel! Around the waist! Under a blazer! It photographed well but would I actually wear it somewhere? Probably not. But, worth it because I learned that my distressed jeans and lace up boots go well with my interview suit jacket. (Jacket/Tank/Jeans/Boots)

What have we learned? Loafers are cool. Blazers should be oversized. Celebrities are no longer cuffing their jeans. Do you have other celebs you look to for style inspiration?

(Also, things linked here that seem really expensive are usually things I found thrifted, more on that here and here).

  1. ok minus the flannel (bc impractical?!) I love your final outfit best I think! fun that it makes you look at your own closet in a new way!

  2. This was so much fun! You did a great job, and I love the idea of recreating street style from stuff you already own or can thrift.
I miss thrifting sooooooooo much. Seven months without being in a thrift store (or any store, other than the grocery) is really undermining my goal to buy used as much as possible. Poshmark helps, but I’ve bough more items on Amazon than is ideal since March (and hated many of them and sent them back, for double the carbon footprint. Argh!)
