A week of academic outfits: What a MLIS student wears

Welcome back to a week of academic outfits! This week, Brittany, an MLIS student, talks style with us! Here, she shows us some great library outfits and chats about…

Brittany is a Master’s student in both Library Sciences and Russian and Eastern European Studies in Indiana. “Broadly speaking, my research examines how societies preserve, manipulate, or reimagine knowledge and history after authoritarian rule. I grew up in a Hungarian and Romanian family, which is often reflected in my research (and sometimes my fashion!).”

Her typical week: In a typical week, I go to class, work as a library technician, tutor, and attend campus events like talks or symposiums. I also study on campus—usually in the library or at a coffee shop with friends. On Thursdays this semester, I take part in my Russian and East European Studies program’s writing group, where I am currently revising a conference paper.

Favorite pieces:  There are so many pieces in my wardrobe that I absolutely adore. I’d say my favorite pieces of clothing tend to be blazers—I love throwing one on top of almost any outfit. But my current favorite item would have to be an embroidered blouse I got while visiting family in Romania over the summer (above), or my blue-printed scarf I picked up from a curated vintage store here in Bloomington!

Where she shops: I used to thrift almost everything I wore in undergrad, but lately I’ve found myself seeking out more specific pieces, which can make thrifting a bit harder. A lot of what I’ve bought recently has come from H&M—it’s grad-student-budget friendly and chic! I also love investing in a good piece from Madewell, Everlane, or Aritzia every now and then (if money weren’t an issue, I’d definitely shop there more often). Levi’s is my go-to for jeans, and Everlane is my favorite for pants.

Style as a collage: My favorite thing about academic fashion is that it lets me combine elegance with creativity! I’m drawn to dark academia, preppy, and French-inspired styles—pieces that feel timeless, polished, and just a little romantic. Academic fashion still leans dressier, which I love, because it feels intentional and put-together. It also lets me channel my femininity—something I’ve been really enjoying lately! I enjoy journaling and collaging in my free time. Fashion is my favorite creative outlet because it’s functional—you literally get to wear something you’ve “made” through styling.

Advice for fellow grad students: Embrace your curiosity! I’ve been a curious person ever since I was little, and I’ve found that even a small spark of curiosity can jump-start creativity in research. My best ideas and questions often just tumble out of my head. Even if you don’t plan to pursue a PhD, curiosity is a trait any employer will value—it helps you solve problems, connect with others, and discover new areas of insight and exploration.

Thank you so much for sharing your week of library style, Brittany! Want more academic outfits? Right this way! You can also follow Brittany on Instagram!
