Hello academic friends! We are back for another week of academia outfit ideas. These are perfect if you’re looking for female grad school outfits (or professor outfits). This month’s series is especially tailored to cold weather. Here’s a week of styling ideas!
Picking outfits as a female grad student can be challenging: you want outfits that are not boring, but you’re also trying to be professional when you teach. Here are some styling prompts you could use if you are looking for some outfit ideas!
Go for soft tones

I forget about pastels in the winter, but I actually love muted colors with a winter spin. Here, I made a teaching outfit with jeans and dressed it up with a mockneck top, blazer, and velvet flats!
Blazer (mine is old–love this green!)

Play up the quirky academic thing

My style goal right now is to make my outfits more interesting. Not “pretty.” Not “professional.” One of the joys of working in higher ed is there is no dress code, so I’m hoping to step out of the box (just a little bit!) and make funkier work outfits that aren’t boring. Here’s an early attempt 🙂

Skirt (similar)
Boots
Think spring!

Yes it’s cold, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pick some spring colors. I’ve been very surprised by how much I reach for these white boots. A styling trick I really like right now is wearing all dark tones + light shoes and the boots definitely unlocked more winter outfit ideas for me!
Blazer (similar color and a cozier vibe???)
Go vintage academia

The funky colors, the white boots, and the brown pants! This is a fun little office outfit that is still warm enough for winter but is anything but boring. If I lived somewhere colder I would also employ one of my favorite wide-leg pants hacks for winter: layer some cozy leggings underneath!
Traditional office outfit, weird cuts

One of my favorite shopping tips for graduate school and beyond is to pick business casual clothing that are just a tad extra. The kick-crop shape of the pants, the wrap feature of the button down–these are the small things that make me feel like me, even if I’m in teaching clothes.
This concludes a month of female professor and grad student outfit ideas! Looking for more inspo??–
