Ok, so I do admit the “dark academia style” trend makes me giggle a bit when you compare it to real academic outfits, so this week, we are balancing the line between dark academia and real academia outfits. Here are some styling prompts you could use if you’re in a winter-style rut!
Layer a cardigan and blazer
First, there is nothing more dark academia than a cardigan, or a blazer…so if you put them together, you basically are a tenured professor (jk they only wear tropical shirts). This is a perfect winter outfit idea because it’s the only time you can get away with this many layers. A checkered or plaid blazer would make this even more professorial!

Mix up your neutrals
Next, an outfit that definitely needs a coat to go outside, but is perfect for teaching in boiling-hot buildings. This high neck shell is my new favorite confidence item. It looks so sharp under a blazer! But, I also love it here as an unexpected way to break up a black and white teaching outfit.

Go oversized for academia style
I love a professor outfit that feels like a hug in cold weather, and that’s exactly how I feel in this ginormous cardigan. I layered it with a long sleeve tee and added white ankle boots for an extra bit of energy.

Add a turtleneck to a dress
We totally just found my first day of the semester outfit! I was unsure if a turtleneck would work under this sleeveless dress and am so happy it does. This, plus the burgundy, makes for a perfect dark academia inspired outfits. In chillier temps I would add brown tights!

Go half casual, half tailored
Finally, I love mixing casual and tailored together to make an unexpected combo. Here, I went super-sporty with the cargo joggers and sneakers, so I added a workwear style cardigan. This, to me, is the perfect casual Friday in the office outfit.
