So you’ve been handed a university tee shirt, or, better yet, a golf polo (WHY). And it’s suggested that you wear it to a recruitment event, homecoming, a sport, or on casual Friday. The big question here is what to wear with a polo shirt for women? What to do if you dislike branded merch and love expressing your personal style in the office? Here are a few ideas…
The university tee
The university tee isn’t soooo bad, but it still creates the question of how to style a t shirt for work. H&M is churning out about 400 of them a year, so I suggest you take your style inspiration from street style as you plan your office outfit. I definitely recommend adding some texture because a t-shirt can feel flat and boring. Here, I picked out slouchy linen trousers, a suede bag, a statement belt, and patent loafers.
The university tee is also handy when you are invited to a college sporting event. You can typically be casual at these, even if you are faculty (but it depends on region!). However, I like a statement jacket (exact, better price), some medium wash jeans, and cool sneakers. The look still says adult, but casual professor!
The polo shirt for women
Oh, the university polo. My university loves them. A few tips? Pick a neutral if you can (black, gray, navy) and pick cotton instead of athletic fabrics. Again, if you can. My friends over on Tiktok also suggested sizing up so you can roll the sleeves.
Here, I added a faux leather blazer (if you pick a blazer, strongly suggest an oversized one or one with texture if preppy is not your thing), smart jeans, and ankle boots.
Another trick is to pick up your school colors but in a subdued way. So if red is one of your colors, a burgundy layer might be a nice touch, for blue, pick navy, green, pick olive, etc etc.
Here I styled it with a burgundy cotton coat (exact, better price), jeans, driving shoes, hoop earrings, and a slim belt.
Another fun style option is to go monochrome! These cool pants add a nice touch, and then I love these square toe flats for their slightly off color. Add a tote and you’re good to go.
